How to Convert a Spa to Soft Soak® or biguanide ...

SpaGuard Soft Soak non chlorine spa chemicals, Soft Soak Sanitizer, Soft Soak Shock, Soft Soak Stain & Scale, Soft Soak Spa Conditioner, Soft Soak Filter Cleaner

Soft Soak® Conversion (first time or upon drain/refill)

If you are converting to Soft Soak® from any other spa sanitizing system, it is always necessary to start with fresh water.

  1. Prior to draining the spa, add Spa System Flush or Swirl Away to clean the spa's plumbing lines. Follow the label directions.
  2. Thoroughly clean all of the spa's surfaces.  Include the well where the drop in filter cartridge fits & around each jet.  These are the crevices where there is poor water circulation & therefore where any water problems will start from.
  3. Fill the spa or hot tub with fresh water.  Do not use water from ponds, lakes or streams as they may contain minerals which could cause staining.
  4. If the fill water contains grit or silt or heavy metals such as iron, copper or manganese, you may want to consider using a pre-filter that attaches to your garden hose.  Sand & grit can mar or scratch spa surfaces while metals could cause surface staining.
  5. Clean the filter with SpaGuard Filter Cleaner & Degreaser. Rinse the filter.  Replace it if necessary.  This will aid in removing any of the "left over" residue from the previous sanitizing system giving you a better start.
  6. Check all plumbing connections.  Add a small amount of "o" ring lubricant to extend their life.
  7. When tightening unions & fittings, HAND TIGHTEN ONLY.  Over-tightening may cause cracking of the spa fittings.
  8. Fill Spa with water.
  9. Once filled with water, start equipment following the manufacturer's written instructions.
  10. Test water for pH, Total Alkalinity & Calcium Hardness.
  11. Balance spa water with SpaGuard® Total Alkalinity Increaser and Calcium Hardness Increaser.  Follow label instructions or the directions provided.
  12. Add the following amounts of Soft Soak products per 150 gallons of spa water:
    Add 1.5 oz. Soft Soak
® Waterline Control (now discontinued - March 2006) or 5 oz. Soft Soak® Spa Conditioner (used at start-up only); allow to circulate for about 30 minutes WITHOUT the air blower.
  13. Add 1.0 oz. Soft Soak® Stain & Scale Control
    Add 3.0 oz. Soft Soak
    ® Shock
  14. All water to circulate continuously for about 30 minutes with the air blowers (if equipped) OFF.
  15. Add 1.0 oz. of Soft Soak® Sanitizer per 150 gallons of spa water & circulate continuously again for about 30 minutes.
  16. Retest spa water using Soft Soak® Water Test Strips.  Sanitizer level should be between 30 and 50 ppm and the pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6.
